Sedation Dentistry

We understand that dental visits can cause anxiety for some children, whether due to fear of the unknown, previous negative experiences, or simply age-related apprehension. Sedation dentistry provides a safe, effective way to help anxious children receive the dental care they need in a calm, comfortable environment. Our sedation options range from mild relaxation to deeper sedation, allowing us to tailor the approach to your child’s specific needs.

Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation may be recommended for children who experience high levels of dental anxiety or fear, need extensive dental work completed in fewer visits, have difficulty sitting still for extended periods, have special needs that make traditional dental care challenging, have a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment, are very young and cannot cooperate with instructions, or are undergoing complex or lengthy procedures.

Our goal is to make dental care accessible and comfortable for every child, regardless of their anxiety level or special needs. Sedation allows us to provide necessary treatment while ensuring your child has a positive experience.

Our Sedation Options

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation and is one of the safest, most effective anxiety relief methods in dentistry. It's ideal for children with mild to moderate anxiety who need help relaxing during their appointment.

How It Works:

Your child breathes the nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen through a small mask that fits over the nose. Within minutes, they’ll feel calm and relaxed while remaining fully awake and able to respond to instructions. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, usually within minutes.

Benefits:
  • Takes effect quickly and wears off rapidly
  • Allows your child to stay conscious and responsive
  • Can be adjusted during the procedure for optimal comfort
  • No needles or medication to swallow
  • Minimal side effects
  • Child can eat and drink normally beforehand
  • No recovery time needed

Best For:

Mild to moderate anxiety, shorter procedures, children who can cooperate but need help relaxing, and most routine dental treatments.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation involves giving your child a liquid or pill medication before the dental appointment. This option provides a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide while still allowing your child to remain conscious.

How It Works:

You’ll give your child the prescribed medication about 30-60 minutes before the appointment (or we may administer it in our office). The medication makes your child very drowsy and relaxed, though they’ll still be awake and able to respond to questions. The effects last longer than nitrous oxide, typically several hours.

Benefits:
  • Deeper relaxation for anxious children
  • No needles or masks required
  • Allows completion of more extensive treatment
  • Child often has little to no memory of the procedure
  • Can be combined with nitrous oxide for enhanced effect
  • Excellent for children with moderate to high anxiety

Important Considerations:
  • No eating or drinking for several hours before appointment
  • Recovery time of several hours needed
  • Child must be monitored closely after the procedureMay experience drowsiness for the rest of the day

Best For:

Moderate to high anxiety, longer procedures, multiple treatments in one visit, and children who need more than nitrous oxide but don’t require general anesthesia.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation provides the deepest level of sedation while maintaining consciousness. It's administered through a small needle in the arm or hand and is closely monitored throughout the procedure.

How It Works:

Medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream, allowing for precise control of sedation depth. Your child will be in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state but can still respond to verbal cues. We continuously monitor vital signs throughout the procedure.

Benefits:
  • Deepest level of conscious sedation
  • Precise control over sedation level
  • Rapid onset and adjustable during treatment
  • Ideal for extensive dental work
  • Child has little to no memory of procedure
  • Can complete multiple treatments in one visit

Important Considerations:
  • Requires fasting before the procedure
  • Longer recovery time needed
  • More extensive monitoring during and after treatment
  • Child cannot drive or return to school that day

Best For:

Severe dental anxiety, extensive dental procedures, children with special needs, and cases where oral sedation alone isn’t sufficient.

General Anesthesia

For the most complex cases or children with severe anxiety or special needs, we may recommend general anesthesia, which is performed in a hospital or surgical center setting with an anesthesiologist present.

How It Works:

Your child is completely asleep and unaware during the procedure. An anesthesiologist manages the anesthesia while our pediatric dentist performs the dental work. Your child wakes up after all treatment is complete.

Best For:

Very young children needing extensive work, children with severe anxiety or behavioral challenges, children with special medical or developmental needs, and extremely complex or lengthy procedures.

Preparing Your Child for Sedation

Proper preparation helps ensure a smooth sedation experience. We’ll provide detailed pre-appointment instructions, which typically include fasting requirements (no food or drink for a specified period before the appointment), medication instructions if oral sedation is used, comfortable clothing recommendations, and what to bring to the appointment.

We encourage you to talk to your child about the upcoming visit in positive, age-appropriate terms. Avoid using scary words like “pain” or “hurt.” Instead, explain that the dentist will help make their teeth healthy and that special medicine will help them feel very relaxed and sleepy.

After Sedation: What to Expect

Recovery varies depending on the type of sedation used. For nitrous oxide, your child will recover within minutes and can resume normal activities immediately. For oral or IV sedation, expect drowsiness for several hours, and plan for your child to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Provide soft foods and plenty of fluids once fully awake. Monitor your child closely as they recover, and follow all post-care instructions provided.

Is Sedation Right for My Child?

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your child’s specific needs, anxiety level, medical history, and the dental treatment planned. Together, we’ll determine the most appropriate sedation option. Many children who initially need sedation gain confidence over time and may eventually be comfortable with little or no sedation.
