Preventive dentistry focuses on maintaining oral health and catching potential problems before they become serious issues. Regular preventive visits are the cornerstone of your child’s dental health, combining professional cleanings, thorough examinations, and age-appropriate education about oral hygiene.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist every six months for preventive care, starting with the eruption of their first tooth or by their first birthday. These regular visits allow us to monitor your child’s dental development, identify concerns early, and build a trusting relationship with your child.
Each preventive visit is tailored to your child’s age and needs, but generally includes:
Our pediatric dentist thoroughly examines your child's teeth, gums, jaw, and bite to assess overall oral health and development. We check for cavities, monitor tooth eruption patterns, evaluate oral tissues for any abnormalities, and assess jaw development and alignment. For young children, we also discuss teething, thumb-sucking habits, and other developmental considerations.
Our gentle dental hygienists carefully clean your child's teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing might miss. We use child-friendly tools and techniques to make the cleaning comfortable and even enjoyable. The cleaning process includes removing plaque and calculus deposits, polishing teeth to remove surface stains, and flossing between all teeth to remove debris and check for areas that need extra attention at home.
We believe that education is a crucial part of preventive care. During each visit, we teach age-appropriate brushing and flossing techniques, discuss nutrition and its impact on dental health, explain how to prevent cavities and gum disease, and answer any questions you or your child may have. We make learning fun and interactive, often using models and demonstrations that children can easily understand and remember.
Dental x-rays help us see what's happening beneath the surface of your child's teeth and gums. We only take x-rays when clinically necessary and use the latest low-radiation digital technology. X-rays help us detect cavities between teeth, monitor developing permanent teeth, assess jaw development and spacing, and identify potential problems early when they're easier to treat.
We understand that some children may feel anxious about dental visits. Our entire team is specially trained in pediatric dentistry and child development, and we use a variety of techniques to make each visit comfortable and even fun. From our welcoming, kid-friendly office environment to our gentle, patient approach, everything we do is designed to help your child feel safe and cared for.
We encourage parent involvement and welcome you in the treatment room, especially for younger children. We also believe in honest, age-appropriate communication with your child about what to expect during each visit.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental visit within six months of getting their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits help us:
Monitor your baby’s oral development, provide guidance on teething, nutrition, and oral hygiene for infants, identify potential issues early, and help your child become comfortable with dental visits from a young age. Even if your child doesn’t have many teeth yet, these early visits establish a dental home and set the stage for a lifetime of good oral health.
Preventive care is a partnership between our office and your family. Between visits, you can support your child’s oral health by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (use a rice-grain-sized amount for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount for children 3 and older), flossing once daily once teeth touch each other, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, choosing water instead of juice or soda, ensuring your child gets adequate fluoride, and maintaining regular six-month preventive appointments.
Give your child the gift of excellent oral health. Regular preventive care is the best investment you can make in your child’s smile.
